Until recently, most CVs I saw were little more than lists of responsibilities,  more often than not, copied word-for-word from job descriptions.

These days, thanks to tools like ChatGPT, responsibilities are being reframed in more dynamic language. But while the style may be improving, the substance often still falls short.

Why? Because too many CVs still focus on what someone did rather than why they did it, how they approached it, or what impact it had.

When I was first taught to write CVs, I learned the “3 Cs” of storytelling-based content: Context, Challenge, and Contribution.

That model still holds up. But over the years, I’ve found that my differentiation as a writer comes from digging deeper and uncovering the stories, strategies, and significance behind the work.

And along the way, I’ve discovered even more “C” words that enrich my CV writing process:

  • Catalyst – What triggered the action or change?
  • Clout – What influence or authority did they hold?
  • Complication – What made the task more difficult, and how was it overcome?
  • Consequence – What happened as a result?

Each of these adds a new layer of clarity, character, and connection, making the writing process even more creative and enjoyable.

And for one final secret…These “C” words work just as well for interview preparation, helping clients tell clearer, more confident, and compelling responses.

….OK, I’ll stop now. All these C-words are making me a little crazy.
